Pennaceous Rachis

  • SOU Theatre Studio 227 University Way Ashland, OR, 97520 (map)

Pennaceous Rachis is the result of years of Downy’s musical collaboration and close friendship. This improvised composition explores how sonic repetition can reveal the unseen in the acoustics of a space and subtle connections between beings. Hear repetitive marimba, sparkling electric guitar, harmonica drones, cello harmonics, synthesizer warbles, and crinkling paper in an intimate performance venue with projections and floor seating. We want the audience to get comfy and participate in this experiential hour-long performance.

Downy is a self-described “experimental improvised folk” trio based out of Seattle, WA. Composed of Tyler Babbie (banjo/guitar/dobro/harmonica/voice/etc), Peter Tracy (cello/guitar/synth/etc), and Sophie Chin (piano/voice/percussion/etc), we explore the intersections between experimental music and folk practices, creating a new sound that encourages communication and dissolves the artificial hierarchies within art.
