The Chair on the Door

  • SOU Black Box Theatre University Way Ashland, OR (map)

Growing up in a doomsday cult that forbids sex might be a problem for people with a body, but great material for a 60-minute show. “The Chair on the Door,” a multi-sensory storytelling show, is the often funny, sometimes death-defying journey of Travis Abels, who explores his collision points between faith, sex and family, through a unique blend of heartfelt tales and award-winning sound design, with an uplifting message about the value of facing your monsters.

Created, Directed & Performed by Travis Abels. Creative Consulting Kelsey Peake

Travis Abels grew up the son of a preacher, fascinated by the infinite ways we use story to create meaning from the chaos of life. Following his passion to make art that connects us to each other and deeper parts of ourselves, he’s created films and stories that’ve won more than a dozen Clio Awards and Moth Grand Slams. Currently, he trains with the Portland Experimental Theater Ensemble, tours his international solo show, and shows unreasonable enthusiasm for squirrels.
