A Submarine Named Shoebox

  • SOU Digital Media Center 1525 Webster Street Ashland, OR (map)

A Submarine Named Shoebox is a one-act chamber play about a voyage taken by an honors student searching for a mysterious creature and the captain of the vessel, a grizzled, retired explorer who seeks solitude in the Shoebox, a small two person operated submarine. It is an intimate play which handles themes such as finding one’s meaning of masculinity, homosexuality, and the continuous search for understanding and bond.

Joshua Patton is a senior pursuing a BFA in Digital Cinema at Southern Oregon University. Having collaborated on many student film projects, the Oregon Fringe Festival presented itself as an opportunity to tell a story in a new medium, that being theatre. In his directorial debut, Josh looks to combine the skills developed in both departments to present a play that represents what he’s learned about himself throughout his time here in Ashland.
